Design Control Strategy

Real solutions evolve when complex challenges are divided into smaller pieces. Our incremental development strategy based upon refined experimentation and assessment enables rapid evolution. It is this spiral development strategy that allows us to acquire materials knowledge and technologies.

Each design phase includes materials research, review, and analysis to evaluate progress and implement progressive alterations in the subsequent phases. Interaction and collaboration between designer, tester, and end user during fabric development ensures superior results.


From Challenge to Solution in Technical Fabrics

The Challenge
NASA required a lightweight fabric that could endure extreme environmental factors and protect its exploration rovers when landing on Mars.

Mars Pathfinder Technical Fabrics

Our Solution
We collaborated with ILC Dover and JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) during the development of a multilayer, flexible laminate for the mission-critical Mars vehicles' impact airbags.

The design included outer protective layers that shielded the inner gas-retaining layer against abrasion and puncture. This multilayer solution met NASA's challenging mass requirements and successfully dissipated the energy of a 45 mph impact into the sharp and rocky Mars terrain!
